Australian floods have caused “incredible” destruction of communities in northern Queensland, said the state’s prime minister, despite the fact that circumstances are easier than forecasts.
Thousands of evacuated residents will return on Tuesday, but fear that hundreds of homes and businesses have flooded.
“This is a disaster that tries people’s determination,” Prime Minister David Crisfulli told ABC.
Since Saturday, some parts of the region have been covered with nearly 2 m (6.5 feet), which has caused ongoing flood warnings and power outages, but the prime minister said the weather was “very nice” in recent hours.
In Townsville, the locals woke up to a gray sky, but they were just sifted, and the news was that the forecasted flood level had not been realized. He was in stark contrast to the intense falls that destroyed the region in recent days.
The relief conditions mean that people who were advised to leave the six Townsville suburbs were likely to “avoid the bullet,” the prime minister said after earlier forecasts were recommended in danger of 1,700 houses.
However, in the northern part of the state, poor communication and damaged roads make it difficult to assess the extent of damage to Ingham and Cardwell.
“The more information comes through, the more it seems to be a real destruction,” said Crisfulli, who grew up in Ingham.
“I saw water images in businesses that never thought in my wildest dreams to see water in shops in the high part of the city,” he said.
According to the state’s energy service provider, more than 8,000 properties are left without power, and the partial collapse of the critical motorway will continue to hinder efforts from promoting the most affected areas.
Crisfulli said the restoration effort was “time”.
